A vehicle consists of a power source and a power transmission system, which provides controlled application of that power. It’s an assembly of parts including the speed-changing gears and the propeller shaft by which the power is transmitted from an engine to a live axle.
Often transmission refers simply to the gearbox that uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device. Later model cars, it is a combination of sophisticated hydraulics and computer-controlled components.

Computers receive information from numerous sensors, process the information, and then signal/operate the transmission. Often, the problem is in one of the sensors, an electrical connection, or system ground.
One of the best ways to prolong the life of your transmission is through regular maintenance. Many factors affect the life expectancy of a vehicle transmission: poor driving habits; distance travelled each year; hauling and towing heavy loads; overheating; and leaking fluid.
